The Public Health (Health Technology Assessment) offered by University of Birmingham is a strand of the Masters in Public Health (MPH) programme for those students who wish to specialise in public health with health technology assessment. The master's programme in Innovative Technology for Healthy Living focuses on the technical solutions for wellness and active lifestyles. Big data obtained from sensors and wearables worn by regular citizens and professional athletes will be translated into contributions to healthy living for the general population, boosting public health initiatives and wellness innovations. Graduates from the programme will be R&D specialists with strong innovation and entrepreneurial skills, able to create bridges between human science, technology and health.

Innovative Technology for Healthy Living at KTH

The master’s programme in Innovative Technology for Healthy Living is a collaboration between EIT Health Partners from academia, research centres and industry. The programme will foster a new generation of master’s graduates with advanced skills and approaches within health-related engineering and innovation. The overall aim of the programme is to equip students with the skills to develop technical and business solutions for healthy living and active ageing. Their work will encourage good health habits in the general population and promote the future wellness of all citizens. A major goal is to enable future scientists and entrepreneurs to create engineering and business solutions that make it possible for citizens to monitor and manage their own health by being informed and skilled in making wellness-driven choices.

The academic faculty involved in the design of the programme has the knowledge and experience to develop, plan and implement sport and exercise activities for individuals (athletes, non-athletes and those with more sedentary lifestyles), and monitor the effects or the impact of such involvement and participation on their health and well-being, using evidence based on anthropometric, biomechanical, biochemical, physiological and psychological parameters. Today's rapid developments in sensor technology, mobile data acquisition, improved risk assessment methodologies combined with Big Data analysis allow the development of pervasive and personalised solutions. The potential with these personalised solutions can span all levels, from cellular through organismic to systemic.

The curriculum includes not only traditional theoretical and practical training gained from the scientific knowledge of the partners involved, but also courses that implement active learning and teaching strategies, team collaboration, aligned teaching, ideation, project management and entrepreneurship skills gained outside the university setting. Challenges within the multidisciplinary areas associated with healthy living and active ageing, and that relate directly to innovation and entrepreneurship, include personalised lifestyle plans. The programme combines advanced scientific education, entrepreneurship training, innovation workshops and round tables, learning-by-doing education as well as offering mobility schemes tailored to the individual student.

Program Information

Online associate's, bachelor's and master's degree programs as well as graduate certificates are all available at schools around the country. Although each school may offer unique classes, there are several health technology courses and topics of study common to online programs. Distance learning coursework often includes the study of human anatomy, physiology, patient care and medical technology management.

Many community colleges and universities use a combination of synchronous and asynchronous technologies to deliver courses via the Internet. Students may also be required to use a type of learning management system, such as Blackboard, to receive feedback from professors and to facilitate class discussions. Some programs may require students to have regular access to word processing, spreadsheet and video presentation software in order to complete assignments.

Online health technology courses are offered via standalone classes, graduate certificates, and associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees. Course topics include health informatics, patient care equipment technology and advanced medical systems.
